Hard Times.

So recently, I put a question box in my sidebar to get you to ask me a question! So far I've only gotten 3 questions between my 2 blogs & that makes me sad! So ask me something! ANYTHING! It can be wierd, scary, silly, nosey... you get the picture! ;) I only won't answer it if it gets TOOO personal or inappropriate... if that is the case, i will email you or something & let you know (if i know who you are)! But i am not expecting those kinds of questions; just normal questions that make me think! You can type it in the box in my sidebar or just go here.

Here is a good question, though!

One Cluttered Brain asked, "Hmm. What do you do that gets you through an extremely hard spot in your life? Does chocolate and other comfort foods really help you?"

Hahaha - NO. Chocolate & other comfort foods do not do anything except (a) make me feel miserably full - assuming I had too much of it (which i probably did if i was going through a bad time!) & (b) make me gain weight (again, assuming I had too much of it!). Comfort food like chocolate is a temporary comfort. Doesn't really do anything long term (except make the pants tighter)!

To get through a hard spot... hmm... i mean, there's lots of things i do when i'm upset - vent to hubby (poor hubby), read, take a nap, blog, pray or go for a walk.

The reading & napping - those are really just means of escape. So i can escape the trouble for awhile. So, those are also temporary fixes.

Venting to hubby helps a ton because he listens well & gives the best hugs & sometimes will start massaging my shoulders while i'm talking... still temporary, but LESS temporary than those above. Actually, sometimes it's less temporary than that, because sometimes he will help me through it enough to where i'm not as upset about it.

Out of those i listed, the prayer or walking help the most! And normally - i do those things at the same time. I have been one who goes on walks alone & just prays to God. It's a good time to do that. And God gives me comfort (long-term) like no one else can.

But still - even then if it's a tough time, what are you to do? When i think of TOUGH, i mean losing someone you love. Facing constant sickness or sick children. Going through depression, for no explained reason (i've been through that one, believe me). My most recent tough spot was when I was in my last job position. I know that doesn't SOUND that bad, but believe me, i have NEVER been so miserable in a job. I later got promoted & i am SO glad that all those efforts of trying to leave didn't work because NOW i totally see why i was here all along. ;) But how did i get through that time?

A lot of crying, a lot of venting, a lot of cussing, a LOT of praying, a lot of whining, a lot of hubby's hugs! HAHA. That's how i got through it. AND one day at a time.

I'm not saying that all of those things are GOOD things. They are just my typical things. I'm not saying those things are the best are that they help you get through things the most sufficiently!! But I'm just saying that is kind of how I get myself through a rough spot.

Exercise, of course, is a great medicine.

And God. I mean, really. Not trying to over-spiritualize anything, but He is the one who has helped me through some REALLY hard times in my life. And you can probably testify to the same thing! He is the one who didn't get too angry with me for all my whining during that last job position (though others totally judged me for it!). He is the one who understood that i was miserable. And He is the one that had this new position waiting for me. He is the one that understood when i was getting sick of single life. He is the one that was there for me through some painful times in my childhood.

Sometimes i could FEEL His presence. Other times I couldn't. But He was still there, just the same & He was working out the situation for my good.

Sometimes it helps me to write down some verses on post-it notes & read them everyday. I am not saying I always do this! But it is a whole lot more helpful than the cussing, venting & crying! ;) (Actually, a good cry does sometimes help - it's the headache after that kills ya!) Here are some verses that help me...

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "Plans to prosper you & not to harm you. Plans to give you a future and a hope." -Jeremiah 29:11

"Do not let your hearts be troubled; trust in God, trust also in Me." -1 John 14:1

"For you turned my wailing into dancing, you removed my sackcloth & covered me with joy, that my heart may sing to you & not be silent. Oh, Lord, my God, i will give you thanks forever." Psalm 30:14-15 (I've always called this my "testimony" verse, but it can be used for any hard time - that God is going to turn that situation around!)

"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of Him." 1 John 5:14-15 (I love that one!)

Great question!

Got one for me? See the box in my sidebar or go here.

  1. Great answers!
BTW, Jeremiah 29:11 has ALWAYS been my favorite scripture; even as a child. I painted it on canvases in my kid's bedrooms because I think it is an important one for them to grab hold of very early in their lives. I repeat that one over and over to myself in difficult times and I always find comfort in it.(I also find temporary relief in alot of those that you have listed as well!!! HAHA!)

  3. its so intresting to see what other people do when they are upset. Today I spent 3 hours driving around DFW (its a rather large area) I just drove and drove...into neighborhoods, by shopping malls, etc...the music blaring on my radio helped, but I just had to get away from my house...after 3 hours I was able to drive home and be okay enough to walk to my room

I cant wait to leave this town.
