Sit up straight!!

Will someone PLEASE tell me to SIT UP STRAIGHT!?

I'm serious. My back is killing me!

I'm not someone you'd see & say "My gosh. She has terrible posture." I'm really not. I stand up straight!! And i sit up straight in other chairs... it's just AT WORK!

When you sit at a desk at work all day everyday - if you aren't sitting properly, you can really harm your back. I have started thinking about this a LOT in the past couple of days because my upper back - around the shoulder blade area - is on FIRE. I don't ever notice the pain when i wake up or when i get to work, but after i've been working a few hours, my back is killing me. By the time i get home, it is on FIRE & i'm  begging for a massage! This has been going on for...ever. Well, i've been knowing that it HAS to have something to do with how i am sitting. Because i end up slouching to write things down or just to be more comfortable. Next thing i know, that area of my back is in SO MUCH PAIN. I started thinking of how I have noticed that dancers have great posture, even when they are sitting. I know I'm making a broad statement, but this is what i have noticed at the theatre. I tried to find pictures from the theatre just to show you what i mean, but i realized that everyone tends to sit up straighter for a photo. So, thanks to google for these images. People will all be sitting indian style talking during a break or something & i'll notice some of my friends that are true dancers are sitting up completely straight. Everyone else is leaning over in one way or another.

Everyone else is sitting like this...

Or this...
But you can always tell which ones the dancer...

(Just reason #312 why i should have never stopped dancing lessons.)

Anyway. Yeah. So this is a problem. Because, seriously, this is me at work.

And a side view.

My upper back - and did i mention my NECK - is PAYING DEARLY for it. Which is why it is on my mind so much today & yesterday. Today i have had to consciously remind myself to sit up straight. I'll sit up straight & in an hour realize i'm all slouchy again.

Websites recommend a back rest to go where the small of your back is & a foot rest also helps. Guess what? I HAVE BOTH OF THOSE!! AHHH. But if i lean back into the chair to where the back rest is touching the small of my back & my shoulder blades are against the chair, then i can't reach the mouse to my computer. Or i can, but it's hard to use. And my butt kinda slides forward or something.

I have decided i have simply GOT to get in the habit of sitting straight. I can't afford to get a massage every day after work & i don't think Brad is going to massage it everyday after work. And i definitely can't afford future back issues! :(

And how come Brad doesn't have this problem!? He sits at a desk everyday at work, too!

Is this a silly post?? If so, I'm sorry, but i am in PAIN!!!! DAILY! Ahhhh!

Any suggestions on how to get in the habit of sitting straight?

  1. When you figure this out, let me know! I'm a sloucher too...my dad used to always remind me when I was younger, but now I don't have anyone to tell me to sit straighter so I have days where my back kills too. Hopefully you find something that works!

  2. Not a silly post... well yes it is silly but it's not. Know what I mean??

I have horrible posture all the time... except when I wear heals... then I stand up tall. But sitting. Ugh. And it hurts my middle back most.

I hear that those workout balls... the big ones... are good for posture. You could always trying making that your desk chair haha. Seriously... word is that people do that.

  4. Not silly at all.

It is a hard habit to develop but with practice you can train yourself to sit up straight. Maybe put a sign up by your computer to remind you?

I find myself slouching also, especially in front of the computer. But I usually catch myself and force myself to straighten up. But then again, I don't sit for long periods of time usually.

I've read that strengthening your abs can help also.

  5. I sometimes get a glimpse of myself in a window. I walk slouched too. Does nothing for my figure all slumped over. If you walk straight it can take 2 inches off. I have to smarten up too.

  6. Ooh I have this problem too! I have a bad sway back and my sholder hunch forward so my posture is way out of wack...I'll tell you what helps is a chiropractor! also, don't cross your legs while at your computer, and pretend you have a string pulling you upwards... My back hurts all the time and morning stretches really help!
